Laid down in July 1941 and commissioned September 30, 1942, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Storis (WAGL/WAG/WAGB/WMEC38) was the only example of her class to have been built. Storis was specially constructed and commissioned for service as an armed ice patrol and supply vessel for the famed Greenland Patrol in the waters around Greenland during World War II. After the War, Storis continued Atlantic operations in a military support role. In 1948, Storis’ patrol area changed to the treacherous waters of the Northern Pacific, Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea near Alaska. Based in Juneau, Storis conducted law enforcement, SAR operations, serviced aids to navigation and performed humanitarian missions through the Bering Sea Patrol. In 1955 and 1956, Storis deployed for Arctic operations with the U.S. Navy in support of hydrographic surveys and the construction of a chain of radar stations in the Arctic known as the Distant Early Warning Line or DEW Line. Storis’ most famous voyage began July 1, 1957 when the ship departed Seattle in company with the smaller 180-foot cutters USCGC Bramble (WAGL-392) and USCGC Spar (WAGL-403), to undertake a forced west-to-east transit of the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic. Following the Northwest Passage mission, Storis transferred to Kodiak, Alaska, her final home port, and went on to carry out an additional forty-nine years of faithful service to the U.S. Coast Guard, performing, as she was designed, various law enforcement, SAR and humanitarian/relief assignments. On October 1, 1991, after forty-nine years of service, Storis became the oldest commissioned cutter in the U.S. Coast Guard – the “Queen of the Fleet” – and she proudly wore her unit number in gold paint. Storis was decommissioned from the U.S. Coast Guard on February 8, 2007 in an emotional ceremony that celebrated her more than sixty-four years of dedicated and decorated service. She was listed as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 2012.
USCGC Bramble (WAGL/WLB-392) is one of the thirty-nine 180-foot (55 m) seagoing buoy tenders built between 1942 and 1944 for the United States Coast Guard. In commission from 1944 until 2003, she served in Pacific, Caribbean and Atlantic waters as well as the Great Lakes. In July 1946, Bramble was present at the Baker atomic test at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. In Summer 1957, she participated in a circumnavigation of North America involving a forced traverse of the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic. Bramble transferred to Detroit, MI, in 1962 and her designation changed from WAGL (Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lighthouse Tender) to WLB (Seagoing Buoy Tender) in 1965. After a major rebuild, she moved to Port Huron, MI, in 1975. Bramble was decommissioned from Coast Guard service on May 22, 2003 at Port Huron. Bramble was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as nationally significant in August 2012.
USCGC SPAR (WAGL/WLB-403) is one of the thirty-nine 180-foot (55 m) seagoing buoy tenders built between 1942 and 1944 for the United States Coast Guard. Her name is an acronym for the Coast Guard motto, “Semper Paratus, Always Ready.” She also honored the members of the SPARs, the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve. In commission from 1944 until 1997, SPAR served in the Atlantic waters off New England. In Summer 1957, she participated in a circumnavigation of North America involving a forced traverse of the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic. Her designation changed from WAGL (Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lighthouse Tender) to WLB (Seagoing Buoy Tender) in 1965. In 1966, SPAR conducted a major transatlantic oceanographic survey that included port calls at Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and Ireland. The ship underwent a major rebuild in 1976 that extended her service another 20 years. SPAR was decommissioned from Coast Guard service on February 28, 1997 at South Portland, ME.
